HS-GfK
Within the framework of the HS-GfK project, the suitability of heated plate welding as a joining process for connecting glass fiber-reinforced plastic pipes was investigated. Particular attention was paid to the correlation between process parameters, fiber orientation, and the resulting weld seam quality. The pipes used were multilayer composite pipes, consisting of a fiber-reinforced middle layer and two unreinforced polymer layers on the inside and outside. Pipes with diameters of 110 mm and 200 mm were used. These were joined using heated plate welding while varying different parameters. It was found that the short-term mechanical properties, as determined by tensile and technological bending tests, are primarily influenced by the distribution of glass fibers within the joining plane. Furthermore, it should be noted that in both burst pressure and long-term internal pressure tests, the weld seam did not constitute a limiting factor; failure consistently occurred in the base material of the pipe.
