Material Technology

Plastics exhibit a range of technical properties that is second to none. Outstanding properties such as almost unlimited malleability, variable hardness and elasticity, amazing breaking strength and excellent chemical resistance contribute to the triumphant success of this material. Our courses in this area shed light on the physical and chemical background and provide explanations for the behavior of plastics in subsequent processing and machining.

Currently our offer regarding standardized education courses in English is limited. If you cannot find the topic suiting your requirements you may look at our German website for courses material technology or simply contact us. A customized course meeting your requirements as in-house-training is always a possible solution.

The density of a plastic is an important material parameter, knowledge of which is essential for processing in particular. The density can be varied by certain additives, such as fillers and additives, or processes, such as foaming. Determining the density of a material is also non-trivial. In addition to the bulk density of a plastic, bulk density and pourability are also important characteristic values for plastic pellets. You will have access to this course for 12 weeks from booking. You will receive a certificate of completion after passing the learning test.

Polymers are large molecules made up of repeating units called monomers. The process of polymerization involves chemically bonding multiple monomers together to form a polymer. There are three main types of polymerization: radical polymerization, addition polymerization and condensation polymerization. In free-radical polymerization, monomers with double bonds are linked in a chain reaction by activation with a catalyst. An example for this reaction is the formation of polyethylene. In addition polymerization monomers with two reactive functional groups react with each other. An example is the chemical reaction of isocyanate and polyol to form Polyurethane. In condensation polymerization, again monomers with two reactive functional groups react with each other. But this reaction results in the loss of a small molecule, such as water or alcohol. An example is the formation of nylon-6,6. Regardless of the type of polymerization, the resulting polymer has a much larger molecular weight than the individual monomers due to the repetition of the monomer units. Polymers can have a variety of physical and chemical properties, depending on the specific monomers and the way they are linked together. You will have access to this course for 12 weeks from booking. You will receive a certificate of completion after passing the learning test.

The glass transition for plastics is often a book with seven seals, even for plastics experts. The processes and effects of this softening point, which occurs in amorphous plastics but can also be observed in semi-crystalline plastics, thermosets and elastomers, are too complex. This e-learning explains in a clear and funny way the thermodynamic and morphological consideration of the glass transition and also shows the practical implications on the part of the machine operator and designer. You will have access to this course for 12 weeks from booking. You will receive a certificate of completion after passing the learning test.
