BioInit
The aim of the research project is to develop a novel bio-based, UV-curable clearcoat system with the special feature of using naturally occurring, non-toxic photoinitiators.
Radiation-curing clearcoat systems, such as those used in the furniture or decor sector, are known for their extremely fast curing and resistance to environmental influences. However, this goes hand in hand with the need to use photoinitiators. Most of the common initiators have a high toxicity potential. By substituting them with naturally occurring, non-toxic and sustainably obtained alternatives, this problem can be almost completely avoided. The challenge here is to achieve the required radical yields and desired final coating properties that are comparable to conventional systems. Within the project, a bio-based clearcoat system shall be developed that meets technical requirements and the demands of the Green Deal and so contributes to a more sustainable environment.
