ASO is committed to promoting young talent and supports young people in their (research) projects: Hanna and Lena Fries (17) as well as Hannah Amrhein (18) from the Julius-Echter-Gymnasium in Elsenfeld were awarded the state prize for chemistry in Bavaria in the "Jugend forscht" competition for the second time in a row in March.

In their current project, they are investigating the photocatalytic activity of self-picked St. John's wort. The young researchers demonstrated that the plant photosensitizer hypericin, which is active over the entire visible range, can break down dyes, convert light into electricity and trigger photocatalytic reductions. Photocatalytic CO2 conversion is thus a new green chemistry from a school lab. They were supported by their supervising teacher Dr. Roland Full and the ASO lab team of Ann-Kathrin Schönbein, Dominik Greim, Ilona Stahl and Florian Kerner.
The analytical service provider supported the students on the one hand with GCMS measurements to detect the photocatalytic reduction that had taken place by a bioavailable St. John's wort catalyst and on the other hand with UV/Vis spectroscopic investigations into the role of the hypericin contained in St. John's wort for the photocatalytic process.
The ASO and the entire SKZ are proud of the students' success and congratulate them warmly on the award.
