20 years in the service of plastics: Anniversary for Prof. Dr.-Ing. Martin Bastian at the German Plastic Center (SKZ)

Prof. Dr.-Ing. Martin Bastian started at the German Plastics Center (SKZ) now more than 20 years ago. Under his leadership, the number of network members doubled and sales more than tripled. SKZ owes its rise to the largest institute in the plastics industry to his foresight, wealth of ideas and skill. The Supervisory Board of FSKZ e.V. and the entire SKZ extend their heartfelt congratulations on the anniversary.

Bastian developed the German Plastics Center into the largest institute in the plastics industry

From the very beginning, Prof. Bastian's work was characterized by an extraordinarily dynamic expansion of user-oriented R&D activities and the consistent modernization of the SKZ's infrastructure and equipment. The scope of services was increased year after year, enabling the SKZ to become by far the largest institute in the plastics industry during this era. The increase in turnover from approx. 13 million euros to over 42 million euros per annum, the establishment of new and the expansion of existing locations, the foundation and development of the European Center for Dispersion Technologies (EZD) in Selb, the quadrupling of space in the laboratories and pilot plants, and the realization of the Model Factory and the Training Center Quality (TZQ) as links for the industrial and digital worlds in production, among other things, reflect the success in facts and figures. Thanks to Prof. Bastian's wealth of ideas and drive, SKZ today more than ever stands for cooperation, foresight, and a top level of services that are well received in practice. And in the years to come, SKZ would like to remain a pioneer in the plastics industry. Prof. Bastian paved the way for important progress regarding climate neutrality and a plastic-neutral future.

Cooperation and networking with the industry has always been a central concern for Prof. Bastian. He has always emphasized that no one can be as good on their own as they are in cooperation with other know-how providers. Accordingly, under his direction, the SKZ network has developed into an important hub in the plastics industry. He has been able to double the number of members in the last 20 years, as a result of which the network has grown into a very powerful community of more than 420 members.

With great commitment, he initiated the establishment of an SKZ endowed professorship at the University of Würzburg in 2011, and through the lectures, many students benefit from the excellent and very broad expertise of numerous SKZ experts. Through the countless publications and lectures, very many other industry members have also become beneficiaries of the knowledge thus generated.

Prof. Dr.-Ing. Martin Bastian is a trained toolmaker and completed an apprenticeship as a mechanical engineer, specializing in design, from 1987 to 1989. From 1991 to 1996 he studied mechanical engineering at the University of Paderborn, specializing in process and plastics engineering. After receiving his doctorate, Prof. Bastian headed the Technology Department at the German Plastics Institute (DKI) in Darmstadt until 2002. Prof. Bastian has now been working at SKZ since 2003 and has made it what it is today: a very important plastics center that generates multi-layered benefits. As President of the Zuse Association, Prof. Bastian also carries the interests of very many other research institutes all the way to federal politics.
