COPPA
Development and demonstration of an open and scalable circular collaboration platform (CCP) for sustainable plastic food packaging
The COPPA project – Open Circular Collaboration Platform for Sustainable Food Packaging from Plastics – addressed key challenges in the circular economy for plastic packaging in the food sector. The aim was to develop an open, digital collaboration platform (CCP) that enables transparent and efficient data exchange along the value chain.
The project ran from July 15, 2022, to July 14, 2025, was led by SKZ – Das Kunststoff-Zentrum, and implemented in collaboration with six project partners. Funded by the Federal Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs (BMLEH), COPPA developed a platform with an integrated Digital Product Passport (DPP), a CO₂ calculator, and a trust and transparency network based on Self-Sovereign Identities (SSI). This enables companies to clearly demonstrate the recycled content and sustainability impact of their packaging. In addition to the technical implementation, guidelines and transformation strategies for SMEs were developed to enable broad participation. With the demonstrator at Technology Readiness Level 5–6 and an accompanying website, COPPA is an important step towards a competitive, sustainable circular economy.
The project results are available in the final report and on the online platform. For further information or questions, please contact Sophia Botsch (SKZ).
