SKZ joins EFEB and strengthens its role in European erosion control

The SKZ Plastics Center has been an official member of the European Association for Erosion Control and Vegetation (EFEB) since 2026. By joining the association, the institute is specifically strengthening professional exchange in the field of erosion control and further expanding its position as an independent testing and research partner for materials and systems in infrastructure construction, landscaping, and environmental protection.

Membership enhances professional exchange and visibility within the network

As part of the new membership, the SKZ welcomed a delegation from the EFEB to its Würzburg location. The ten technical representatives gained practical insights into the institute’s comprehensive testing infrastructure and broad portfolio of methods. Among other things, mechanical testing technology and options for conducting durability tests were presented.

In addition, the SKZ presented further testing methods required by the M AEBEL guideline, including tests for microbiological resistance. The institute’s own greenhouse was also explained in more detail during a presentation.

Testing expertise for greening systems and green roofs
Particular emphasis was placed on the SKZ’s technical expertise in testing the root resistance of products such as roofing membranes and coatings for green roofs. The tests conducted in the greenhouse enable realistic assessments of materials’ resistance to root penetration by plants—in accordance with the requirements of the FLL Green Roof Guidelines.

Involvement in Expert Committees and Regulatory Work
Following the delegation’s visit, the EFEB general meeting took place at the Bavarian State Institute for Viticulture and Horticulture. Wilma Hahn attended on behalf of the SKZ. She is active in FGSV Working Group 5.4.1 “Erosion Control and Vegetation Support” and contributes her expertise there to the further development of practical regulations.

For several years now, the SKZ has been actively involved in standardization and committee work in the field of erosion control. For example, the institute played a key role in developing the M AEBEL guideline, which was published in 2025 and is now considered an important reference framework for the planning, testing, and application of erosion control and vegetation aids.

Interdisciplinary testing specialist for sustainable erosion control solutions
With its membership in EFEB, SKZ underscores its expanded expertise as a testing specialist—both for geosynthetic materials made of plastic and for natural materials such as coconut fiber, jute, or wood fibers, which are becoming increasingly important in modern, sustainable erosion control.

“Through our membership in EFEB, we are deepening professional exchange at the European level and contributing our many years of testing and standardization experience to the network in a targeted manner. Erosion control solutions today must be equally functional, sustainable, and compliant with standards—it is precisely at this intersection that we see our role as an independent testing specialist,” says Wilma Hahn.
