Concepts for the future
Fiber reinforced plastics – FRP have already a broad range of applications in various industrial sectors due to their adjustable properties. Mainly because of their excellent weight-specific strengths with nearly free shaping, these light-weight materials are increasingly replacing traditional materials and contribute to a material-saving and thus resource-saving design. These success factors offer countless incentives for engineers and designers to use this material more intensively in other areas, for example in construction.
The key activities of the business unit Composites focus on the holistic view of the use of fiber reinforced plastics, from the selection and adjustment of the material properties through the design of objects and components to the technological realization of production and joining concepts. This approach is complemented by the addressing the destructive analysis and repair of fiber reinforced structures. Our goal is the development of new technological concepts for the use of FRP, as they are needed in the areas of wind energy, design applications and mobility.
Among other things, the team works besides fundamental material aspects also on the integrated system solutions, including novel composite materials such as, for example, natural fiber reinforced composite materials and carbon concrete. The overall goal of all activities is to integrate and make effective use of novel and further developed material properties in a wide range of applications.
