Mixing of WPC
In the last years, a clear trend leads to superior products from wood plastic composites (WPC), since the quality of several products of the first generation was rather low. Despite the current predominant use of WPC products on polyolefin basis on the world market, the interest in PVC as plastic matrix for WPC grows strongly especially for outdoor applications.
The compounding and processing technologies for PVC based WPC are similar to those for pure PVC. However, problems, which are not known using the standard preparation for PVC-Dryblends, appear at the preparation of WPC-Dryblends in a heating-cooling mixer. Within the scope of the industrial cooperation, both recipe as well as treatment related effects were identified, which have consequences on the WPC dry blend properties itself, their processability and the finished WPC products. Furthermore, test methods, which are suitable for a rapid characterization of WPC dry blend, were developed and verified. Based on these investigations, the quality of the WPC dry blends can be improved.
