In 1996 this standard VDA 6 for audits at suppliers of serial components in automotive industry was created out of the certification standard VDA 6.1 for quality management systems. VDA 6.1 comprises the requirements on direct and sub-suppliers in automotive industry. Requirements define automotive matters, but also economy and customer satisfaction. Supporting manuals deal with initial sampling, failure analysis (FMEA) and quality planning. Non-conforming with comparable standards VDA 6.1 does not have the same structure as ISO 9001 but has an own one. A certificate according to ISO 9001 is necessary to get an additional certificate according to VDA 6.1. A certification according to VDA 6.1 meets the requirements of most German automotive producers and their direct suppliers. This standard is reputed on international level by an agreement of VDA with automotive associations in Italy and France which recognize their national regulations.
