Microscopy

Microscopic analyses are an important tool for the evaluation of structure-property relationships of plastics.

By this means, polymeric structure and spherulite size distribution can be displayed and evaluated. Within the scope of failure analysis, microscopy is used for examining manufacturing and processing defects, such as inclusions, voids, vacuoles, cracks, fracture surfaces as well as defects in layer structures or joints. Other issues include the distribution and matrix adhesion of fillers and reinforcing materials such as glass fibres and beads, natural fibres, chalk and talc or the dispersion of pigments in coloured compounds.

Depending on the task and the material, the light microscopic analyses can be conducted by using both reflected and transmitted light techniques, i.e. by means of preparing microtome sections (microtomy). Contrasting techniques include bright field, dark field, polarization, fluorescence and differential interference contrast. Furthermore, we conduct scanning electron microscope analyses so that the specimen can be imaged either in material or topography contrast. All microscopes are connected to digital imaging systems. This guarantees a quick and clear documentation of the results.

Our testing laboratory is equipped with the following microscopes:

  • Stereomicroscope: 5-fold up to 63-fold magnification
  • Classical optical microscopes: 25-fold up to 1,000-fold magnification
  • Digital light microscopes: 20-fold up to 1,000-fold magnification,
    motorised stage, 3D imaging and automatic image stitching
  • High-resolution scanning electron microscope (FESEM)
    up to 900,000-fold magnification, resolution < 5 nm, coupled with
    energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS) for element analysis
