This technical specification ISO TS 16949 is the first certified standard for a quality management system of automotive suppliers and their sub-suppliers worldwide. Automotive associations in U.S.A., Japan, Great Britain, France, Italy and Germany agreed to this standard. ISO/TS 16949 is based on ISO 9001 (quality) and additionally contains special requirements for automotive industry to optimize the coordination of different processes. This standard is focused on avoiding failures and minimizing risks (maintaining supply). Further features are process optimization and data for a constant improvement. Certificates issued according to ISO TS 16949 are reputed by automotive industry and suppliers worldwide to prove that the quality management system of a supplier of serial components meets the requirements. In principle ISO TS 16949 may be applied on whole supply chain of automotive industry but it is absolutely required for direct suppliers. Sub-suppliers of second or third level have to prove a quality management system according to ISO 9001 which shall be developed towards ISO TS 16949:2009. The certification will be realized according to the rules of IATF (International Automotive Task Force).
